Weekend Post : Custom Festivals and Folklore







A festival is an occasion for feasting or celebration, especially a day or time of religious significance that recurs at regular intervals. Many festival celebrations are used to celebrate customs which are practices followed by people of a particular group or region. Spring is even celebrated in certain countries with different religon. One example is Bulgarian festivals. Every year on March 1st , Bulgarians give one another 'martenitsas'. Martenitsases are small things made of white and red threads. It is a symbol of the awakening of spring , health , and happiness. Then , in late May , the rose picking seasons starts in the Valley of Roses. It sarts at dawn , before sunrise , and before the rose frangrance has had a chance to dissapear. The Bulgarian oleaginous rose hold 70 percent of the world's collection of roses used by every well known perfume company. When you think of a rose perfume , Bulgarian's will come to your mind! This custom is celebrated carnivals , processions , folk songs and dances. The dances are held in Karlovo and Kazanluk on the first Sunday in June.
